How Technology and better Infrastructure can fix Lima’s Public Transit

1. What is the problem?

Currently in Huaycan, Ate Vitarte, there are various public transportation options with routes to the north, south, and downtown Lima. However, informal vehicles with dubious reputation, severe traffic and high passenger volume make commuting an unpleasant experience, taking around 2 hours for a distance of about 30 Km.

Moreover, fares are rising, and no one feels safe on public transit, because thieves can get on board anywhere and at any time.

2. How does this problem affect you or make you feel?

This problem severely affects people's quality of life, as they spend almost 4 hours a day travelling round-trip-time that could otherwise be spent visiting family, exercising or working on their personal projects. On the other hand, they may feel tired before the workday even starts. Dealing with informal drivers, aggressive traffic and unsafe conditions makes them feel angry, irritated and frustrated leaving them with a sense of powerlessness over their own schedule.

3. How would you like to change things?

I believe the municipal government needs to restructure Lima’s public transportation system.

First, informal vehicles, vans, and small transit vehicles should be phased out. The city should only authorize large buses capable of carrying more than 50 passengers, leading to fewer small vehicles and better - managed bus capacity. Furthermore, every bus must belong to a formal transit company and operate under fixed routes and schedules, picking up passengers only at designed stops.

Second, police officers should conduct random patrols across trains and buses to monitor suspicious behavior and arrest anyone violating local rules, causing public disturbances, or committing violent acts.

4. What technology can help with this change?

There should be a unified mobile app covering all authorized transport operators. This would allow passengers to look up routes, check real-times schedules and plan their commute efficiently.
Additionally, transit cards should be easily rechargeable online or at various locations 24/7, enabling passengers to travel throughout Lima completely cashless.

Finally, train networks must be expanded to outer districts. While Lima currently has Line 1 connecting East and South Lima, rapidly growing areas like Huaycán in Ate Vitarte urgently need elevated rail or underground metro lines to ensure faster, more direct connectivity across the metropolis.

5. How can it help?

So, integrating smart technology with an expanded transit network can significantly improve overall quality of life and well-being. By reducing daily traffic congestion and commute times, reliable transportation allows citizens to reclaim valuable hours every day. With less time wasted on the road, people can be more productive at work and dedicate meaningful time to family, exercise or pursue personal projects.
